Deep Dive into RIL’s Workshop | Report from NW Syria Challenge Mapping Workshops

Food security in Northwest Syria is increasingly threatened by water scarcity, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather linked to climate change. Irregular rainfall and rising temperatures have depleted water sources, reduced crop yields, and weakened livestock production, making agriculture less viable. Floods and soil degradation further disrupt food production, displacing farmers and limiting the local food supply. As agricultural output declines, communities become more dependent on imports and humanitarian aid, making food access highly unstable. Without urgent climate-adaptive solutions—such as sustainable water management and resilient farming practices—food insecurity will worsen, pushing millions further into crisis.

Recognizing the urgency of these challenges, the Syria Response Innovation Lab (RIL), in collaboration with Field Ready Middle East, World Vision Syria Response (WVSR), and the Food Security Cluster (FS Cluster), organized two back-to-back workshops—one in Gaziantep, Türkiye, and another in Northwest Syria at the RIL. These workshops provided a platform for frontline responders to voice challenges, exchange insights, and collaboratively design solutions, fostering local ownership.

The sessions brought together diverse stakeholders, including UN agencies, INGOs, LNGOs, local authorities, service providers, individual experts, and non-traditional actors engaged in food security response. Through a collaborative problem-solving approach, participants co-created innovative strategies to enhance resilience, improve coordination, and address the most pressing food security challenges in Northwest Syria.
