Fish and Vegetables of Tigris
Integrated fish farming.
Location: Mosel
Host: Oxfam Iraq
Funded by IRIL
The project is introducing integrated fish farming techniques to a local context that does not utilize it.
The Problem
A shortage of fresh fish in the local market and reduce the chemical fertilizers.
The Solution
This integrated fish farming uses aquaculture techniques to cultivate fish. The project team connected the irrigation system with an aquarium to start the cycle. As it passes through the tube system, water feeds the vegetables with all required organic material to grow. The main objective of this is to avoid and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers to feed plants. The project utilizes greenhouses to ensure that the production cycle will be during all seasons. This project is powered by solar energy.
Where is Fish and Vegetables of Tigris Now
Despite challenges that forced the project to relocate and to lose all previous progress, Fish and Vegetables of Tigris is re-starting at a new location. They are currently experimenting with planting Okra in the greenhouses, and they have started planting alfalfa to feed sheep in the farm area. Fish and Vegetables of Tigris is seeking to finalise their transition to the new location and to resume sales.
