Kyemeire International Vocational Secondary School
Continuous and safe learning for children at home
The Vocational Secondary school supported Communiteachers (volunteer teachers in the community) in Nankoma Town council, Bugiri district to provide continuous and safe learning to children while at their homes. Kyemeire international is working with a local teachers association called Teachers Across Frontiers (these are teachers outside formal classrooms) to recruit the communiteachers. With the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the school mobilized teachers living in the community (the communiteachers) and provided them with access to the school library, laboratories, and scholastics. With this support, the communiteachers were able to reach out to selected children in their communities. These then shared the learning with their peers as they worked and played. The learning material used to reach out was designed to be competence-based rather than examination-oriented, it was integrated into the day-to-day life of the children such as work, play, and singing. The school is now working with 10 Local councils to mobilize the children while ensuring the standard operating procedures as provided by the Ministry of Health are followed. The local councils identify and recommend the families for this service. The first phase of this innovation looked at the content to be delivered by Communiteachers while the second phase will involve the development of a digital application, the ALLEARN APP.
